Seu Zé, the AI grandpa of the baile charme

Who is Seu Zé?

Seu Zé ("Mr. Zé", a friendly Brazilian way to address an older man) is the star of the clip that started the baile charme AI trend. He has a big white afro, round glasses and a grey moustache, wears a red short-sleeved shirt with black suspenders and a belt bag, and dances the charme step better than anyone around him. He is entirely AI-generated.

The clip, second by second

• The look back. He glances over his shoulder at the camera, unimpressed.
• The step. Shoulders bouncing, forearms swinging in front of the hips.
• The lean. Knees soft, hands sliding past each other at waist height, while a younger dancer joins at his side.
• The turn. A side step and a spin that ends the 12 seconds.

Why the vovô worked

The joke is in the caption: nobody expected grandpa to be the best dancer at the party. It plays on a familiar surprise (the older guest who knows every step) and on the real baile charme scene, where dancers of every age share the floor. That combination of warmth and swagger is what made people want to put themselves, their friends and their grandparents in his place.

Be the vovô yourself

The Vovô no Baile template ages your face to around 75, gives you Seu Zé’s red shirt and suspenders and drops you into the same crowd. Prefer to stay your age? Use Viaduto Classic instead.
