What is baile charme?
The Rio party, the dance and the music behind the charme dance AI trend.
Updated Oct 20, 2026
A baile charme is a party in Rio de Janeiro where people dance "charme", a line-and-step style set to R&B, soul and slow hip-hop. The best known one runs under the Viaduto Negrão de Lima in Madureira, in Rio's North Zone, where a packed floor dances the same steps together under floodlights.
Where charme comes from
Charme grew out of the Black soul parties of 1970s and 80s Rio. DJs played American R&B and soul, and dancers built a shared vocabulary of steps that a whole floor could follow. The name "charme" (charm) describes the relaxed, stylish way the steps are done rather than any single move.
What the dance looks like
- Dancers stand in loose lines facing the same way.
- Shoulders bounce on the beat while the forearms swing in front of the hips.
- The body leans forward with hands sliding past each other at waist height.
- Small side steps keep the groove going; the line turns together on cue.
From baile charme to the AI video trend
In 2026 a phone-style clip of an AI grandpa, Seu Zé, dancing at a baile charme spread on TikTok. Because the shot is always the same crowd with one lead dancer, it was easy to remake with any face, and "baile charme AI" and "charme dance AI" became the names for the trend. The AI clips borrow the look of the party, not real footage of it.
