Where it started

The trend grew from a single phone-style clip: an elderly man with a white afro, round glasses, a red shirt and suspenders, dancing the charme step in the middle of a packed night-time party. The caption reads "Ninguém botou fé no vovô no baile charme" ("nobody believed in grandpa at the baile charme"). The grandpa, nicknamed Seu Zé, is AI-generated, but the setting is modelled on the real baile charme parties under the Madureira viaduct in Rio de Janeiro.

Why it spread

  • One fixed shot. The crowd, the lights and the camera never change, so swapping the lead dancer is all it takes to make a new version.
  • A step you can read instantly. Charme is danced in set steps, so the shoulder bounce and forward lean are recognisable in a second, even on a small screen.
  • The sound. The original audio became the trend’s signature; hearing it is enough to know what is coming.
  • The joke scales. Grandpa out-dancing everyone works just as well with a superhero, a famous painting or your best friend.

The kinds of remakes

  • Celebrity and character remakes: action stars, footballers, superheroes, even the Mona Lisa.
  • Personal remakes: people putting themselves, a partner or a friend in the lead role.
  • Style remakes: black-and-white film, 80s wardrobe, or the dancer aged to 75.
